Why Compare Dog Supplies? Maximising Your Money Without Losing The Quality

When I first got our dog I bought whatever was recommended to me from the people who recommended it. So I bought dog food from the Breeder, I bought flea and worm treatments from the Vet, harnesses from the dog trainer and toys from my local shop. Now all of these people were lovely people trying to make a living, and who can blame them. But I started to realise that I was paying way over the odds for everything and my dog was costing me an absolute fortune. I desperately needed to find and dog but I didn’t want to make significant changes to the of the products that I bought.

The first thing that I decided to do something about was the dog food. I was paying £50 a month for Arden Grange Puppy food. He then grew out of that and I paid £45 a month on the adult Arden Grange food. Now Arden Grange is a good premium dog food and our dog was happy on that and his coat is fantastic.

Everyone comments on the shine and those in the know say “is he fed Arden Grange”? So how can you find cheaper Arden Grange? First off I searched for wholesalers for cheap dog supplies. I found one locally who would sell it for £35 for a 15kg bag, saving me about £10 a month. I then did a wider search and found that I could get it over the internet for between £27 – £31 per 15kg bag – depending upon incentives and delivery costs. On average I save myself £15 a month simply by shopping around and I get exactly the same product with the added bonus of having it delivered directly to my door so I don’t have to drive and heft it around.

I then looked at Pet Insurance. You take out pet insurance with the hope that you can pay as little as possible for the peace of mind in case something goes wrong. I very seriously weighed up the costs versus the advantages of buying lifetime cover versus a fixed limit per condition cover. I can’t tell you how happy I am that I went with the lifetime cover. Although it costs me more per month, my dog has developed osteo-arthritis and we probably claim back the premiums and then some in treatment for him. However what I didn’t do at the beginning was shop around for Pet Insurance. The Vet and the Breeder recommended Pet Plan, which is a good insurer with excellent pay out policy. However I didn’t realise that there are competitors that provide the same level of cover and payout and charge about a third less per month. I would advise anyone who doesn’t have a dog with an ongoing medical condition to shop around every year to find the best deal – staying with the same insurer is only advisable if you have a dog with an ongoing condition that has been covered from the start.

I then decided that there must be a way to get cheap dog supplies for the Vet recommended products. My Vet told me that I couldn’t get the same Drontal and Frontline treatments anywhere else and charged me £12 to worm a 35kg dog. I got exactly the same product for £5 with free postage and by buying a years supply of frontline in one go I managed to save myself £30 on the Vet price!

I also shop around for leads, collars, dog beds, water bowls, toys, books, everything and I manage to save myself money. My friend has just written an article on Road Refresher dog bowls and why they are brilliant. She asked me to find the cheapest deal and I found one for £5.01 including postage. She was gutted! She’d paid over £15 for hers! It is absolutely realistic to expect to get cheap dog supplies on top branded products.
