Well, trust me … a good flea and tick spray (or flea drops, which are a little easier to use) can be a very good investment.

Frontline Dog

There’s nothing like sitting around on the couch with your dog, enjoying some snacks and a movie when you reach over to pet her and creepy crawly-notice fleas scurrying along her skin. If that doesn’t get you reaching for Advantage flea drops, Frontline Plus flea and tick or spray, I don’t know what will!

In fact, this happened to me with my guide dog puppy, Kera. I asked our localGuide Dog Program coordinators what I should do, and they recommended, Frontline Plus for dogs.

We used it and it worked right away.

You get a little vial of the medication and you just put a few drops along the dogs backbone and it spreads over the body, and is retained in the skin, where it is also effective for the month.

This was super. After that I didn’t worry about taking Kera to the park, or on long walks through the woods.

We still checked her out to make sure there were no ticks hiding, but we didn’t see any. After a while, my husband and I were more worried about the ticks getting on us than on our dog.

Allergies are one of the most common complaints among dog owners. Truly, not too many puppies have allergies their first year but many are already becoming sensitized to things in their environment. If your puppy is already shows signs of allergies, and some do, don’t hesitate to get it treated. You may head off a lifetime of trouble if you get a handle on it early. Allergies get worse if left untreated every year.

Allergies usually materialize in the form of small skin eruptions, itching, rashes, hair loss, dry or ear infections, dermatitis and oozing. Dogs will chew over wash themselves, rub, scratch, and to alleviate the sensations which in turn makes them worse.

Frontline Dog

HOW ALLERGIES DEVELOP

 Allergies in Dogs

Allergies are such that your dog may be exposed-pathogenic one year and to a show no outward signs of ailment … this time. Next time he comes in contact, it will create a reaction, maybe small at first, but each time he is getting more sensitized and each time the reaction will be a little, or a lot worse. We often hear of owners saying, “he never had this problem before.” Yeah, we know, that’s how it works.

Dogs can develop allergies to any number of things such as trees, shrubs, grass, dust mites, carbon, and most commonly … fleas. If your dog has an allergy to something, it will take very little to set of a histamine reaction in his body. Dogs are now commonly allergic to things their skin touches rather than something they inhale. They may be allergic to pollen but it is usually the contact problem, notan inhalant one like with people.

MOST COMMON CAUSE

Fleas are the most common cause of allergies by far. You may not even think your dog has fleas but it could only take one bite to set him off. One of the most important things you can do is protect him against fleas. Protect him aggressively and often. There are excellent products on the market today such as Advantage, Frontline, Revolution, and Sentinel. A couple of these require simple blood tests before they can be used because they also protect against heartworms. You must always make sure your dog is not infected before starting on heartworm medication.

TREATING FOR FLEAS

It is also vital that you treat not only your pet but also his environment as best you can. Fleas can liveanywhere. They reside quite nicely in your yard, grass, sand, dirt, carpet, bedding, and anywhere else you can think of. And the are resilient. Persistence is a must. One study showed fleas that were found in Arctic Turns nests which were thawed out and found to be still viable after having been frozen for a long time.

The fleas life cycle must be broken to gain any sort of advantage at depleting their population. Treat the house, the yard, and your pets. Make sure you use products that are safe for all your pets. Cats and other small animals can be very sensitive to toxins. Please NEVER use over the counter products unless they are recommended by your veterinarian. Many of the products sold in stores are very dangerous and can be deadly, especially to cats.

TREATINGTHE ALLERGY

There are many ways to treat your dog if he develops allergies. If it is not too bad you may only have minor flare ups in the summer which can be treated with antihistamines and lacquered espresso baths. The dogs who really suffer often require year round treatment, or at least aggressive treatment through their sensitive times of the year. The regimen may include injections of steroids, antihistamine and steroid tablets, special diet, flea products, and frequent soothing baths.

FOOD ALLERGIES

Less that 10% of dogs who have allergies are allergic to what they eat. We often make that leap on our own because there are so many allergies with the human population. Not so with your dog. While it is quite possible. It is not usually thethe best place to start looking for solutions. Many dog food companies have created diets for dogs who are sensitive to their diets however. Hills and Nature’s Recipe are among the leaders. They make a variety of foods with ingredients that your dog won’t have come in contact with. They may include venison, duck, lamb, rice, whitefish and potato.

The trick to ruling out a food allergy is to eliminate everything else they may put in their mouths and it will take up to 60 days to clear everything from their system. You must only change their diet but also eliminate resort unless they are just hand outs of the same biscuits, he gets at meals. You must have him eat from stainless bowls. You must remove any chew toys, like rawhides, and cows hooves. Thissounds easy but it must be maintained without hesitation or fail or else it will all be for not. Any contact will set you back to the beginning.

ENVIRONMENTAL ALLERGIES

Dogs and usually allergic to more than one antigen. Now I will react to varying degrees to a number of different things the come in contact with. While dogs are often allergic to pollens, it is not usually due to inhalation, but due to contact with the skin. If your dog has a severe sensitivity to grass for instance, you may need to wash off his feet every time he comes in from outside. Even just rinsing them will help prevent further involvement. He may need baths several times a week but only with specific types of treatments and direction from the veterinarian. The wrong thingscould aggravate the problem instead of help.

Dog allergies usually come in the form of dermatitis, some form of skin inflamation, redness, hair loss, itching, scratching, oozing, and ear infections. The animals are truly miserable and inconsolable. If you can get by with a few treatments in the season you should consider yourself lucky as allergies go. If you have a dog who is sensitive to something all year or hyper sensitive at certain times of the year you may need to explore allergy testing and injections.

ALLERGY TESTING

Allergy testing is the best way to determine what exactly you are battling and how best to handle it. The tests are done either in the form of skin testing where part of the dog is shaved and tiny amounts of possibleallergens are injected under the skin or applied to to see what he might react to. The areas are checked regularly for signs of reaction. Another is the blood test where the dogs blood is drawn and sent to the special laboratory who just does this type of blood work. The results can take a week or two but the answers come without further insult to the dogs skin.

A blood test will tell you not only what they are allergic to, but HOW they are allergic. It will show the titer, or a number out of normal range, and to help you understand how severe it is raised. The test will cover 20 or more different possible pathogens which are prominent in your part of the country and test the blood to all of them. You can also test for food allergies this way.

One otherbenefit of blood testing is that you have not only the vet and his experience but you also have the laboratory to help guide him with their vast and focused expertise. The labs will guide you through the many types of treatments that may be done at home and by the vet.

ANTIGEN THERAPY

Once the blood work has determined what the dog is allergic to, the lab can make an antigen therapy which the dog will begin to undergo but-sensitizing him. The will contain an antigen vial and injectable sterile form of what the dog is allergic to. Tiny amounts are injected under the skin and regular intervals and strengths to allow the dogs body to start to build a tolerance to it. This can take months and may have to be done every so often to maintain theeffect but it is the most promising form of treatment.

If your dog has severe allergies you and your vet will become well acquainted so make sure you and your dog are comfortable with them and their office. Allergies can be expensive, frustrating, infuriating, and time consuming but they can almost always be alleviated.

Man’s best friend is often host to a number of unfriendly parasites and critters. However, none is more disgusting than the different varieties of North American ticks. Below are listed a couple of diseases that ticks can transmit, some with definite symptoms and some somewhat vague. At the end of this paper, I will list some common preventive methods used to help protect Fido from these tick-borne diseases. Here are the common diseases.

Dog ticks can transmit the parasite called Babesiosis. These are found in wild dog populations, foxes and mostly in the south. This bug is more prevalent among dogs in kennels and may spread because of the closeness of the dogs to each other. The symptoms to watch out for are intermittent sporadically fever, weakness, jaundice (in the gums and whites ofthe eyes) to start. Other more serious signs like internal bleeding can also occur. Dogs who survive never seem to fully recover having relapses from time to time.

Brown Dog Ticks transmit the Ehrlichiosis bacteria. The symptoms of this disease are vague and now observe that the dog is lethargic, looses weight and has a definite loss of appetite. In more severe cases, symptoms may include arthritis, bleeding from the nose, muscle wasting and some neurological signs. Treatment doesn’t seem to rid the dog of the relapses often occur and a few bacteria. German Shepherds seem to be especially prone to getting the disease from the bacteria.

Frontline Dog

The Lone Star Ticks transmit Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever famous (RMSF). The organism that causes RMSF is called Rickettsiarickettsii. This disease is also found in the United States and signs symptoms to watch for include lethargy, weight loss, love and intermittent sporadically fever. Other signs may be vomiting and diarrhea. Signs of the disease show up in a few weeks after the initial tick bite.

Finally, Lyme Disease, transmitted by tick bites, is caused by the bacteria Forrellia burgdorferi. The tick that commonly spread this disease is the Deer tick or the Black-legged Tick. Even when engorged with the dog’s blood, these ticks are small and somewhat hard to detect. The symptom of Lyme disease is that the dog will start limping and the temperature begins to run. It usually starts slowly with the limping and finally the dog refuses to use the limb at all. Eventually, the dog becomes bed-ridden and surgery can be neededsince all of the joints are affected. If earlier treatment is begun, the dog has a good chance of not suffering any long-term effects.

So what is the answer to protecting your dog against tick-borne diseases? The answer is prevention with a capital “P”. Prevention is truly better than the cure. The use of the flea and tick collar like Frontline Plus or Advantage (for example) provides protection during tick season. “Knowing that tick season usually begins with the first thaw through the first frost and acting to protect your dog with a collar is the best protection. Other possible preventatives are Advantage, the use of special Shampoos and sprays of Itch.

Similarly ticks cause allergies and they are the main carriers of Lyme disease. Ticks are difficult to remove and get rid of completely. Brush your pet’s hair with a good flea comb and check for presence of fleas. Routine grooming and bathing with a good shampoo is essential in keeping these pests at bay. You may bathe your pet once a month or as per your convenience.

If you have been on an outing with your pet and he appears to be dirty, give him a bath with a good cleansing shampoo with Aloe Shampoo, You like to get rid of filth and foxglove. While bathing your pet check his fur carefully and remove all the fleas that you can find. Take a helper along if you need help to bathe your doggie.

It is imperative to treat your house at the same time as treating your pet as fleas around the house will keep laying eggs and multiplying. Vacuum clean every room in your house. Washall your pet’s bedding, food bowls and litter trays. Get flea bombs from a good brand containing the active ingredient IRG. The flea fogger will help in killing fleas in all infected rooms in your house. Spread the borax in your house and lawn for 2-3 days. Then vacuum the space completely.

If you do not like to use chemicals around your pets, you could try natural remedies like spreading out of eucalyptus leaves around the house, in cupboards and all places where your pet lays. Applying salt to your carpet also helps to get rid of fleas as they do not like salt.

Fleas are tiny, dark brown, creepy-crawlies which feed on animals by sucking their blood. They move around on the surface of the skin, dodging between hairs and are difficult to see, let alone remove. They might live on your cat or dog for about a month. During this time they cause no great harm now animals as long as there are not too many of them. The occasional “itch” is all we might notice. However some animals become very sensitive to flea bites and can develop severe skin disease as a result. This could be likened to some people getting hay fever through inhaling pollen grains, when other people breathing the same air might feel fine. This can explain why just one animal from the group develops the flea “problem”. Generally speaking it is true to say that ifyou see the flea then there are going to be lots of them around. If you never see the flea, it simply means that there are not lots. It does not mean there aren’t any.

Just like every other animal, fleas breed. In fact they are rather good at it. The female flea will lay eggs every day of her adult life. These tend to fall off the animal and are never seen. However they hatch and develop as minute larvae, nooks and crannies living in the heart of your home. Carpets and the gaps between floor and skirting boards make a wonderful nursery for these little blighters. When they are ready they hop onto the next passing warm and furry creature and get ready to lay more eggs, and so the cycle goes on. The trouble lies in the fact that for every one flea on your pet there might be 100 eggs ordeveloping immature fleas, living out of sight in your home. This means that by the time we notice any fleas at all, there are usually the vast numbers developing in the background, ready to launch their “excavator”. In fact, switching on the central heating in the autumn tends to fool the dormant army into thinking it is springtime. They all develop at once and suddenly they can seem to be everywhere. If there are enough of them they might bite you as well!

So what can we do about them? Well the best thing is to keep your pets protected all year round so that the flea problem does not get started. Any animal which goes outside at all is at risk of picking up the occasional flea. Hedgehogs and other small mammals can carry them, leaving a few in your garden. Using an effectivetreatment all year round is the best answer. If you do not do this and you then see fleas (this usually happens in the autumn) then it is highly likely that there are going to be masses of them living in the house, with only a tiny fraction of the population living on your pet. So if you treat your pet with a perfectly effective product, one week, the next week it might be crawling with them again. They will not be the same fleas that you saw in the previous week, the next wave of invaders. This means that you should treat your house as well. Households where there are cats and dogs together tend to suffer the greatest flea problems, but even for single cat households can be affected. It is important to treat every animal in the house, and vital to treat the housetoo.

So called “spot-on” products are the most popular. The original brands contained una-phosphorus compounds and were not very safe. They have gone off the market now and all modern treatments are likely to be very safe. The most effective ones tend only to be sold through pharmacies or some vets. Ones which can be bought from pet shops and supermarkets do not contain the same ingredients and are usually not nearly as effective. We recommend the “Frontline” or “Stronghold”, but other products such as “Advantage” and “Advantix (for dogs only) seem to be effective. Frontline is also available as a spray. This is slightly more difficult to use, but is probably the most effective and yet safeproduct on the market for fleas. It kills ticks and other surface-living parasites too. Stronghold has a different advantage in that it controls most other parasites too, including the vast majority of the intestine the worms and mange mites. Speak to your vet if you need more information.

To treat the household there are a number of good products. We recommend the “Acclaim” or “sprays” Indorex. The main thing to remember is to treat the whole house as fleas are very mobile. Follow the directions on the can and make sure you buy enough of the product to treat everywhere.

It is also helpful to vacuum clean any carpets or other areas where pets tend to rest, and dispose of the dust and debris outside. Also put any bedding which your pet uses through the washing machinethis will destroy huge numbers of eggs and developing larvae.

Remember that fleas have existed for a very long time and are very good at surviving unnoticed. It is best not to wait until you see them, because then they will have got a huge head start. Treat regularly as a precaution. And then finally-don’t have nightmares, sleep well!
